  • 1.  CDC's Data Modernization Initiative Discussion

    Posted 02-16-2024 05:26 PM

    Good afternoon,

I hope everyone had a great weekend. During our Feb 1st webinar, CDC's Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technology (OPHDST) discussed their data modernization initiative plans and efforts. Based on this webinar, we wanted to open discussions with the questions below. For those who missed the webinar, a recording can be found in the library tab.

    1. During our webinar, the CDC talked about their Public Health Data Strategy (PHDS); if you've had the chance to review the document, how do the goals of the PHDS align with your LHD's needs? Are there any gaps you've identified? Public Health Data Strategy
    2. Additionally, the CDC discussed their plan to provide technical assistance resources to support data modernization implementations to STLTs. What would you like to see as part of these resources?

    Hi everybody,

    1. During our webinar, the CDC talked about their Public Health Data Strategy (PHDS); if you've had the chance to review the document, how do the goals of the PHDS align with your LHD's needs? Are there any gaps you've identified? Public Health Data Strategy
      • After reviewing the PHDS and Core Data Sources page on the OPHDST Public Health Strategy pages, I realized the core data sources they're working on include both data sources we're historically and currently well-equipped to handle (but always trying to improve) and others that we've been diving into because access to those data can be challenging with our current data sharing infrastructure. The data sources & goals overview really seemed to cover things pretty comprehensively, for our area at least, with some notable gaps, such as early childhood data, licensing data and other data sources that we have to help us better understand health outcomes. Access for STLTs to the raw data with some geographical component would be really useful for geospatial analysis that we use very frequently, but identifiable data to link to other data sources (such as programmatic data and interventions in our jurisdiction) would be useful. I'm not sure I noticed this clearly in their strategy.
    2. Additionally, the CDC discussed their plan to provide technical assistance resources to support data modernization implementations to STLTs. What would you like to see as part of these resources?
      • I would like to see specific data flows for various data systems, such as emergency department data.  I'm also looking forward to seeing how these milestones are achieved and would be interested in learning more about how LHD epidemiology teams can engage and maybe support the solution development process (i.e. piloting a tool or data flow).
