  • 1.  Training LHD Staff for Chemical Response

    Posted 03-25-2025 11:07 AM

Hello everyone, NACCHO posted a blog post (here) with a resource round up we conducted composed of trainings and exercises available for public health practitioners, emergency and first responders, toxicologists, hazardous materials technicians, healthcare providers and hospitals, pharmacies, NGOs, and emergency managers. Have you taken any of these trainings? If so, what did you think of them? Are there any trainings that we missed that you would recommend? How does your LHD train staff to respond effectively to chemical incidents?

At Boulder County Public Health in Colorado, we have a strong partnership with our local Hazmat Authority and our Local Emergency Planning Committee, including a chair position on the board of the latter. We attend monthly training events with our Hazmat Authority. We also participated in a full scale exercise last summer with the HA and a local biotech/ pharmaceutical company to help develop relationships with our industry partners. I understand this is not a specific training available through an official partner, but these local partnerships have been highly effective for our agency and perhaps other jurisdictions could look into developing them as well. Working with our LEPC helps us to know what kind of chemicals are housed within our county which assists with planning and preparedness.
