The Healthcare and Public Health Sector Coordinating Council - Cyber Working Group is collecting information on public health processes to map identify dependency systems in critical Public Health Functions.

Attached, and imaged below is a draft of the Public Health Laboratory. Please provide feedback on this map to include missing systems, agencies, or other elements. Narrative explanation:

Some diseases require Public Health Laboratory testing. These may be for rare disease which commercial labs do not have capability for, or for law enforcement specific events. A patient engages a healthcare facility for services and provides medical information and a sample for testing to the healthcare facility. The healthcare facility contacts the Local/Regional Public Health Department to engage the area's public health laboratory. The Local/Regional Public Health Department contacts the State Public Health Department to request Public Health Laboratory agency testing. The state, local/regional public health departments, and healthcare facility coordinate with the Public Health Laboratory Agency, in many cases this is owned and operated by the State Public Health Department. A sample is generated by the patient and with medical information is sent to the Public Health Laboratory Agency. The Laboratory Agency performs testing and generates medical information which is placed into the Jurisdiction's Infectious Disease Surveillance Information System. This information is passed back to the Healthcare facility for patient care and patient information. In some cases, a sample may need to be sent to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Laboratory for further testing. In these cases the State Public Health Department coordinates with the CDC to identify a destination CDC Laboratory. After coordination is complete, medical information, and a sample is sent to the CDC identified Laboratory. After testing, medical information is returned to the state, local/regional public health departments and the healthcare facility for patient care.
